Lots of startups have tried to solve the social networking overload problem. For example, FriendFeed lets you aggregate activities from dozens of different sites, and Facebook has followed suit with its own import features.

But what if rather than try to aggregate activities from existing social sites, there was just one social network that combined them all? Meet Flitterin, the subject of our latest social media cartoon!

Top 10 Social Networks for Entrepreneurs

    Here are the top 10 social networks for entrepreneurs. Each helps entrepreneurs succeed by providing them with the guidance, tools and resources they need to setup their company and gain exposure.

    1. Entrepreneur Connect


    Entrepreneur Media, the company that produces Entrepreneur Magazine, started a social network over a year ago specifically for entrepreneurs and small business owners called Entrepreneur Connect.   Like all social networks, you have the opportunity to create your own profile, explore the community, share ideas with other entrepreneurs and network. Unlike most social networks, this one frowns upon too much self-promotion and applauds idea sharing.

    You can use this network to connect to service providers, suppliers, advisers and colleagues.  Just like LinkedIn and FacebookFacebook reviewsFacebook reviews, there are professional groups that you can join or create.  Another cool feature is that you’re able to start your own blog and possibly have it appear on the main page.  This is similar to what Fast Company has done with their website.


    2. PartnerUp


    PartnerUp is a social network for entrepreneurs who are searching for people and resources for business opportunities.  Anyone can join, but business partners, co-founders, executives and board members will get the most out of this one.  In this network, you can ask or offer advice, find commercial real estate and find service providers like accountants and marketers for your business.

    The big differentiator with this social network is the commercial real estate “MoveUpSM” program that serves entrepreneurs who have experienced a hard time trying to find office space for their business.  They also have a Resource Directory that allows small and mid-sized businesses to advertise their services.


    3.  StartupNation

    Most social networks neglect the content aspect that makes StartupNation so useful.  With articles, forums, blogs, on-demand seminars, and podcasts, entrepreneurs will be better prepared for their ventures and have the resources required to make better business decisions.

    There are a wide range of topics being discussed on StartupNation right now, including business planning, marketing and web-based business.  The site also offers a series of competitions, such as a dorm-based 20 contest and an elevator pitch competition. If you’re an entrepreneur or hope to become one, this site is definitely one you can’t miss out on.


    4.  LinkedIn


    It’s difficult to leave LinkedIn off of any social networking list because it’s so useful for anyone who’s either searching for a job, is trying to network with like-minded individuals, or building a company.  LinkedIn offers many resources for entrepreneurs, such as groups, including the very popular “On Startups” group that has over 54,000 members.

    Entrepreneurs on LinkedIn should brand themselves properly so they can attract the right kind of business opportunities, and perform searches to find service providers or partners.  As an entrepreneur, you should also be looking to participate in LinkedIn Answers, events and applications to spruce up your profile and become a valuable member to your community.


    5. Biznik


    This isn’t another LinkedIn clone.  Instead, Biznik brands itself as a social network that “doesn’t suck.”  The Biznik community is composed of freelancers, CEOs, and the self-employed.  Like the other networks, this is a place for you to share ideas, instead of posting your resume.  It is mandatory for all members to use their real names and provide real data, and Biznik editors actually review all profiles to ensure compliance with that policy.  There are three levels of membership, including basic, active ($10 a month for an enhanced profile) and supporting ($24 a month for increased visibility).


    6.  Perfect Business


    If you want to meet thousands of serious entrepreneurs, experts and investors from a variety of industries, then Perfect Business might be the perfect social network for you.  The type of people you’ll find are potential business partners, potential clients and advisers. Additionally, the site has leading business partners like Entrepreneur and Virgin Money.

    From business networking to a video center where you can learn from successful entrepreneurs, a business plan builder and even an investor center, you’ll have most of the resources you need to create or regenerate your business. There is a free basic membership and a gold membership that costs $29.99 per month.


    7.  Go BIG Network


    The Go BIG Network embraces job seekers, in addition to funding sources, service providers and entrepreneurs.  In this social network, you post requests for help, which are then routed to other people in the network that can answer your questions or support you.  Members of this social network can search through profiles of other members, contact them or post a request (a classified ad) to talk about what they are looking for (such as a business partner).  The profiles on this network are targeted and specific so it’s easy to find an investor in a particular region.


    8.  Cofoundr


    The Cofoundr network is made up of idea makers, entrepreneurs, programmers, web designers, investors, freelancers and executives.  The primary purpose of joining this network is to start a new web venture.  Unlike most of the social networks already listed here, Cofoundr is a strictly private network, which means that you can’t view member profiles before you register for an account.

    Membership requires having a valid university or work email address, which means high schools students and younger aren’t allowed.  The first thing you have to do is sign up, then specify your abilities and the people you are trying to network with and finally, post your idea on the bulletin board or in the forum.


    9.   The Funded

    The Funded is an online community of entrepreneurs who research, rate and review funding sources.  Entrepreneurs can view and share terms sheets to assist each other in finding good investors, as well as discuss the inner workings of operating a business.  General benefits of this site include viewing facts, reviews and commentary on funding resources, and accessing RSS feeds of the most recent public comments by members.

    By joining the site, you have access to detailed fund profiles with specialty, reference investments, and investment criteria, in addition to accessing partner vCards that have full contact information of all partners at venture funds.  In order to get any value out of this social network, you pretty much have to become a member.


    10.  Young Entrepreneur


    If you’re young, entrepreneurial and socially active or just curious, then Young Entrepreneur is a great starting point for you.  This community appears as a discussion forum, with topics such as e-commerce, search engine optimization, marketing, IT & Internet, and franchising.  Aside from their main forum and threads, there is a popular blog and some great videos.

Join the Twitter Crowd Before Attending An Event

While you are at that meeting, sitting through a keynote speech or doodling (like I do) on your notepad, I bet if you look around the room, everone is texting on their phone.  And if you investigate further, you will find everyone Tweeting.

You say, what on earth is that?  It is Twitter…the faster growing social networking site today.  You follow me, I’ll follow you…you get friends to follow me too…I recommend people to follow you.

There is a LOT of great information on Twitter and reading all the tweets from some of the people in the know (or “celebrities” as they are called on Twitter) will only help you with your internet career.  There area a lot of people who are willing to help if you just ask.

But if you are going to an event, you can let people follow along with you as you attend the meeting, conference, etc.  If it is an interesting event, you might want to share some ideas or tips you hear.  People love information which is being “tweeted” live.

Before you go, as early as possible, be sure to get a phone that can text.  I will not recommend any phone over another because there are SO many out there today.  I have heard a lot of people like their Blackberry or their IPhone just for the variety of applications and ease of use.

Once you have your phone, and even from your computer, start making lots of friends but don’t go crazy about yourself.  And especially DO NOT advertise your business.  No one wants to know about that when you are first getting to know someone.  You can send people to your blog or website but don’t overdo it.  You will get “unfollowed” and see your following drop.

Tweet that you will be attending the event on a regular basis and use search.twitter.com to find anyone else who might be attending.  To increase your chances of getting a follow back, send an @reply to introduce yourself.

Find out if there’s a “hashtag”, like #tcot that can help you follow tweets about the event.

When you are at the event:

You can use Twitter’s mobile site, sending tweets via text and checking them on m.twitter.com so your phone doesn’t get overloaded.

Use Twitter as a business card replacement.  Follow other Twitterers by texting “follow user-name to 40404″ and stay connected after the event.

Listen in to get instant audience feedback if you are on a panel.

You can connect instantly via direct message (DM) so you can meet up with other Tweeters.  You don’t need a mobile number to text personally.

The main thing to remember is to not get overwhelmed by all the tweets that you will see streaming by from all those you follow.  It can be a little daunting and if you click on every tweet you see that looks interesting, you will never get anything done.  It is VERY addicting!

Look for things of interest and click on only those tweets.  Just think of it like being at a party.  You usually don’t stand around talking to one person or set of people all evening.  You usually work your way around the room talking a little bit to everyone.  That is the same as Twitter….”work the room” or the message board as it is called.

Tweets are 140-character bites of information streaming by all day long.  When you are at a meeting, conference, etc. just send the interesting items.  Don’t Tweet everything…you will lose your readers interest.  Only put something of significance through the message board.

Moderation is the key with Twitter…remember, too much of  a good thing can work against you.

On The Eve Of Its Fifth Birthday, A Facebook Design Retrospective

Facebook turns five years old tomorrow. That’s practically middle-aged in Silicon Valley. To celebrate, Facebook has put up this slideshow that highlights Facebook’s evolving Web design over that time period. We’ve reproduced the slides below. (Yeah, we wish they were bigger too).

Founder Mark Zuckerberg also hints at a surprise virtual gift that will that will appear tomorrow in the the Facebook Gift Shop. Oh, what could it be?

Twitblogs Alpha Aims at Middle – Between Blogs and Twitter

Twitblogs is an interesting startup currently in alpha that is designed for “long winded” Twitter life streamers like myself. It allows any Twitter user to tweet as usual, or to use Twitter for microblogging, complete with images, sounds, videos, and rich text. This will eventually allow for a deeper and more diverse experience for those who opt to dig into it. Essentially the service provides a “back story” for any Twitter tweet.

How It Works

The Twitblogs interface is clean and simple. Users are essentially looking at a three tab, top navigation interface with a sidebar reflection of their Twitter account. The top tabs reflect the functions it offers: Blog, Twitter, and Search respectively. In the screen shot below, these basic functions are seen with the other elements.

Blogging

The blog interface is the heart of this little tweet enhancer. A simple text editor is provided, along with photo and image capability. To post a tweet with extras simply requires entering the standard 140 character tweet, inputting any URLs (which are then shortened), and then adding more text and other media as desired. The end result is an update on Twitter, with a link back to the full entry. The input interface and the resulting post are illustrated below.

Tweets here work just as simply as they do on the Twitter site itself; perhaps even smoother. Without going into too much detail, it is obvious how useful and fun this tool will be for many. For those who feel frustrated with the limitations of just 140 characters, this is a happy compromise between a full blog post and a tiny tweet.

Searching

Twitblogs offers a nice search function that can be quite effective for finding people or relevant tweets on Twitter. The ability to save those searches is a helpful addition. Below is a search result along with the save function that helped me find things related to a friend.

Other Aspects

According to the Twitblogs development team, within the next week or so, they intend to release several key features, among those are: Growl notification support, threaded conversation in the Twitter tab, auto refresh in search, twitblo.gs version of shortened URLs, and other improvements.

Conclusion

Twitblogs is co-founded by Roger Kondrat, Santosh Panda, and Sam Sethi. So far there are no strict roles for the founders, but Roger is head of Marketing and PR, Sam’s bio reads like business development, and Santosh’s akin to CTO. I suggested to Roger that Twitblogs would make one interesting tool in widget form, to which he agreed – suggesting I wait to see what’s next. Twitblogs right now is replete with a good number of bugs and glitches that make the experience rather, well, aggravating. These appear to be mainly Javascript issues, and the team assured me they are going to a more pure CSS format for many features.

Though only in very early development, Twitblogs has obvious potential. According to Roger, they already have relationships with Amazon and Sun Microsystems. From a blogger perspective it currently serves little purpose, but I see the finished tool as a communications platform in portable form. It makes sense as a widget, but one where the dialogue started on Twitter, can be used to engage a deeper dialogue and experience it quickly, easily and from anywhere. This is where I think the tool is headed, and it is actually just what Twitter needed in the first place.

Using Twestival To Increase Your Audience While Helping Raise Money for Charity

Zuckerberg: Facebook’s “Intense” Year

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, in a tie? Oh my.

If you know Mark you know he’s a pretty casual dresser. Usually seen in T-shirt, jeans, and sandals.

But not here at the World Economic Forum where we walked around downtown Davos last night for a while before heading into the Time Magazine’s reception.

This year people at the party noted his tie and he explained that he was wearing it to denote that this was Facebook’s “intense” year.

Last year when we walked around Davos they had about 50 million users. Today? More than 150 million with about 450,000 new users joining every day.

This is Facebook’s make or break year. It is the year that will set them up to be one of Silicon Valley’s most respected brands along with HP, Intel, Google or, well, it could be the year that the wheels come off of the train and everything goes wrong.

The tie is his way of telling his team and the world that this is Facebook’s most intense year.

We talked about a few other things too, here’s a selection.

**I gave him heck for kicking off people from Facebook who didn’t deserve the “death penalty,” as I put it. He said that they are always looking at how to protect its system from spammers and bad actors. “We’d rather put up with a few false positives,” he told me. He did like my idea of a less punitive “jail” for first-time offenders, though, so that the team can turn off certain features instead of just killing the account altogether. He also said that his system looks for “outlying” behavior. He said if you behave like an average user you should never trigger the algorithms that will get you kicked off. Of course, that irks me a bit because my usage of social media sites is totally outlier behavior. But, I can see his point. One thing that’s nice about Facebook is that I see very little spam or other nasty behavior.

**Facebook is, he told me, studying “sentiment” behavior. It hasn’t yet used that research in its public service yet, but is looking to figure out if people are having a good day or bad day. He said that already his teams are able to sense when nasty news, like stock prices are headed down, is underway. He also told me that the sentiment engine notices a lot of “going out” kinds of messages on Friday afternoon and then notices a lot of “hungover” messages on Saturday morning. He’s not sure where that research will lead. We talked about how sentiment analysis might lead to a new kind of news display in Facebook. Knowing whether a story is positive or negative would let Facebook pick a good selection of both kinds of news, or maybe even let you choose whether you want to see only “happy” news.

**At the Time Magazine party tons of people came up to him to tell him their Facebook stories. He deals with them graciously and talks to them about features in Facebook they might try. He noted with one such fan that lots of people haven’t played with the privacy settings, which give you control over who can see your photos, for instance. I think that’s really why Facebook is so popular. I know my wife really loves Facebook but hasn’t taken to Twitter or friendfeed. I sense that her ability to control which friends see her stuff is one reason why she’s so enthusiastic about Facebook. The second in command at Time, Michael Elliot said he would be so cool with his kids if they new he was hanging out with Zuckerberg.

**He asked me what I was most excited about. We talked about friendfeed. It’s clear to me that he’s watching friendfeed and learning from it about what works and doesn’t work. We talked about how it let me “sift” through tons of news and noise and pick things out for my friends to read. He’s very interested in that trend and, indeed, took a lot of shots when he added a newsfeed to Facebook. Now, he notes, that is a key feature of Facebook and even the haters have gotten used to it.

**He attended Vladimir Putin’s talk and thought Putin’s talk was interesting. “He is running Russia like the CEO of a big oil company,” Zuckerberg told me. As we talked it was clear that Zuckerberg analyzes how other people run things and is looking for positive things to do with his own company and is looking for what turns him off. He studied Psychology at Harvard and I see that training come out when discussing world events with him. You can also see his understanding of how people work all through Facebook.

Anyway, I like the new intensity, but I did note that he was still wearing jeans and had his top button undone. Casual intensity. Sounds like Facebook is growing up, doesn’t it?

Twitter Nation

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social networking and micrblogging service that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question:  What are you doing?

But that “What are  you doing?” question can go a long way towards building you, your brand and your business.

Do you realize that Twitter is:

  • -The most viral application social users are using right now?
  • -You can accomplish listbuilding and have access to other people’s lists?
  • -Twitter is a Microblogging site?

It is not the old days whereby someone captures their own list and then no one knows who is on that list.  All you need to do is click on a person’s name to see their “followers.”  You can then click on their name and start following them as well!
