7 Facebook Apps You Might Want to Add

Facebook is a great site for reaching new and current customers. Facebook Page is a preferred method for user interaction with a brand, company or public figure.

You can attract fans and they can always come back to to share more and more content on your page. To do this, you need a page that has some great applications supported by good, relevant content. Here are just a few:

1. Facebook Notes

This is an actual Facebook application unlike so many of the other applications that are available at the site. Since it is an actual Facebook app, it is less likely to break or be abandoned. Set up this application to pick up info from your blog (see note below) or other contents source. It will automatically bring everything into Facebook and show everyone that you have posted a new Note.

This type of notification is important for staying fresh on their minds and is more visible than an RSS reader or mini-blog. Start here to get good content coming into your page and them move on to the RSS Reader.

2. Blog

Having a Blog is comparable to your own diary being displayed. A blog can allow you the freedom to write good content, let everyone get to know you and see what you are interested in. A Blog can be professional, fun, informative, nonsensical….whatever you want it to be. Just don’t load it up with a bunch of affiliate links or links to buy this or buy that. Readers will run away from your blog if it is one big sales pitch.

3. Blog RSS Feed Reader

It is time for feeding those blogs to your Facebook page, so that your community gets updated with fresher entries. Blog RSS Fees Reader is one of the best RSS readers available on Facebook. A reason why it is chosen is that it has the ability to pull from enterprise-worthy blogging applications and widgets like Movable type. Updates to one’s blogs are fed through this RSS reader directly onto the Facebook page of users.

4. Static FBML

You cannot type any HTML in the main content section on Facebook Pages or Profiles. But, you can add FBML and HTML apps to add more stylized elements to a Page. This would be something such as clickable images, anchor text and interactive content. The app allows you add a customizable box where you can add the HTML or FBML( Facebook Markup Language). This way, you can add images, video, stylized text, etc. This app is also developed and supported by Facebook.

5. Extended Info

In this box, you can use HTML to customize any kind of content and create numerous fields beyond the standard information categories; you can also name the box anything you want so it matches your page perfectly. This app works much like the Static FBML app but is slightly easier to use. This app is not developed by Facebook but is highly recommended and provides another alternative for a second box option on your page.

6. Flash Player

Adding a flash player app will add a box to your Page so that you can upload your own Flash files. This will allow you to add video, widgets or a game. It can also be renamed to remain consistent with your brand.

7. Posted Items Pro

With this app, you can embed multiple you can add similar items like in your “old” Posted Items, but with much more control.

These are some of the enhanced features supporting a broader file type supporting:

Videos: YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo Video, etc. All of them play on your profile (not just YouTube!).
Widgets: Supports the My iTunes widget (and thousands more)
Music: Make a list of mp3s, order them, publish and play them
Images: Show and link to images with thumbnail
Web links: Links to sites with a selection of thumbnails to choose from.
Facebook Pages Support: Use this app to place items on your Facebook Pages.

You can also embed multiple files in your profile for your friends to see, hear, and watch:

Add items: Easily add all kinds of items with thumbnails and comments.
Order files: Sequence the items the way you want
Preview and Publish: Review your profile box prior to updating it

Ever got a Twitter follow notification from a Twitter user with a spammy name like “Satellite TV for PC”? Did you notice they’re following thousands of people, but not all those people are following them back?

The account might be a Twitter follow bot: an automated script that follows thousands of users in the hope some of them might return the follow and subscribe to the spammy messages. Take a look at these tools to help you out there in blogosphere world:

1)   www.Technorati.com:  helps you find out what is happening on the World Live Web right now.  At Technorati you can set up a profile and register or “claim” your blogs.  From there, make a widget and put it on your blog so that people can track you in Technorati.

2)  http://blogsearch.google.com:  let’s you see the top stories by topic and which blogs are carrying the story.  This can be a great tool for tracking who is doing what

3)  (Nielsen Buzzmetrics Blog):  allows you to quickly see the trend in the occurrence of specific words or phrases as used within the blogospere. blogpulse_logo_bodywww.Blogpulse.com

4)   blogpulse_logo_bodywww.Blogpulse.com/trend BlogPulse Trend Search allows you to create graphs that visually track “buzz” over time for certain key words, phrases or links. Compare search terms/links in isolation, or use all three fields to compare search terms/links against others.

Join the Twitter Crowd Before Attending An Event

While you are at that meeting, sitting through a keynote speech or doodling (like I do) on your notepad, I bet if you look around the room, everone is texting on their phone.  And if you investigate further, you will find everyone Tweeting.

You say, what on earth is that?  It is Twitter…the faster growing social networking site today.  You follow me, I’ll follow you…you get friends to follow me too…I recommend people to follow you.

There is a LOT of great information on Twitter and reading all the tweets from some of the people in the know (or “celebrities” as they are called on Twitter) will only help you with your internet career.  There area a lot of people who are willing to help if you just ask.

But if you are going to an event, you can let people follow along with you as you attend the meeting, conference, etc.  If it is an interesting event, you might want to share some ideas or tips you hear.  People love information which is being “tweeted” live.

Before you go, as early as possible, be sure to get a phone that can text.  I will not recommend any phone over another because there are SO many out there today.  I have heard a lot of people like their Blackberry or their IPhone just for the variety of applications and ease of use.

Once you have your phone, and even from your computer, start making lots of friends but don’t go crazy about yourself.  And especially DO NOT advertise your business.  No one wants to know about that when you are first getting to know someone.  You can send people to your blog or website but don’t overdo it.  You will get “unfollowed” and see your following drop.

Tweet that you will be attending the event on a regular basis and use search.twitter.com to find anyone else who might be attending.  To increase your chances of getting a follow back, send an @reply to introduce yourself.

Find out if there’s a “hashtag”, like #tcot that can help you follow tweets about the event.

When you are at the event:

You can use Twitter’s mobile site, sending tweets via text and checking them on m.twitter.com so your phone doesn’t get overloaded.

Use Twitter as a business card replacement.  Follow other Twitterers by texting “follow user-name to 40404″ and stay connected after the event.

Listen in to get instant audience feedback if you are on a panel.

You can connect instantly via direct message (DM) so you can meet up with other Tweeters.  You don’t need a mobile number to text personally.

The main thing to remember is to not get overwhelmed by all the tweets that you will see streaming by from all those you follow.  It can be a little daunting and if you click on every tweet you see that looks interesting, you will never get anything done.  It is VERY addicting!

Look for things of interest and click on only those tweets.  Just think of it like being at a party.  You usually don’t stand around talking to one person or set of people all evening.  You usually work your way around the room talking a little bit to everyone.  That is the same as Twitter….”work the room” or the message board as it is called.

Tweets are 140-character bites of information streaming by all day long.  When you are at a meeting, conference, etc. just send the interesting items.  Don’t Tweet everything…you will lose your readers interest.  Only put something of significance through the message board.

Moderation is the key with Twitter…remember, too much of  a good thing can work against you.

On The Eve Of Its Fifth Birthday, A Facebook Design Retrospective

Twitblogs Alpha Aims at Middle – Between Blogs and Twitter

Twitblogs is an interesting startup currently in alpha that is designed for “long winded” Twitter life streamers like myself. It allows any Twitter user to tweet as usual, or to use Twitter for microblogging, complete with images, sounds, videos, and rich text. This will eventually allow for a deeper and more diverse experience for those who opt to dig into it. Essentially the service provides a “back story” for any Twitter tweet.

How It Works

The Twitblogs interface is clean and simple. Users are essentially looking at a three tab, top navigation interface with a sidebar reflection of their Twitter account. The top tabs reflect the functions it offers: Blog, Twitter, and Search respectively. In the screen shot below, these basic functions are seen with the other elements.

Blogging

The blog interface is the heart of this little tweet enhancer. A simple text editor is provided, along with photo and image capability. To post a tweet with extras simply requires entering the standard 140 character tweet, inputting any URLs (which are then shortened), and then adding more text and other media as desired. The end result is an update on Twitter, with a link back to the full entry. The input interface and the resulting post are illustrated below.

Tweets here work just as simply as they do on the Twitter site itself; perhaps even smoother. Without going into too much detail, it is obvious how useful and fun this tool will be for many. For those who feel frustrated with the limitations of just 140 characters, this is a happy compromise between a full blog post and a tiny tweet.

Searching

Twitblogs offers a nice search function that can be quite effective for finding people or relevant tweets on Twitter. The ability to save those searches is a helpful addition. Below is a search result along with the save function that helped me find things related to a friend.

Other Aspects

According to the Twitblogs development team, within the next week or so, they intend to release several key features, among those are: Growl notification support, threaded conversation in the Twitter tab, auto refresh in search, twitblo.gs version of shortened URLs, and other improvements.

Conclusion

Twitblogs is co-founded by Roger Kondrat, Santosh Panda, and Sam Sethi. So far there are no strict roles for the founders, but Roger is head of Marketing and PR, Sam’s bio reads like business development, and Santosh’s akin to CTO. I suggested to Roger that Twitblogs would make one interesting tool in widget form, to which he agreed – suggesting I wait to see what’s next. Twitblogs right now is replete with a good number of bugs and glitches that make the experience rather, well, aggravating. These appear to be mainly Javascript issues, and the team assured me they are going to a more pure CSS format for many features.

Though only in very early development, Twitblogs has obvious potential. According to Roger, they already have relationships with Amazon and Sun Microsystems. From a blogger perspective it currently serves little purpose, but I see the finished tool as a communications platform in portable form. It makes sense as a widget, but one where the dialogue started on Twitter, can be used to engage a deeper dialogue and experience it quickly, easily and from anywhere. This is where I think the tool is headed, and it is actually just what Twitter needed in the first place.

Zuckerberg: Facebook’s “Intense” Year

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, in a tie? Oh my.

If you know Mark you know he’s a pretty casual dresser. Usually seen in T-shirt, jeans, and sandals.

But not here at the World Economic Forum where we walked around downtown Davos last night for a while before heading into the Time Magazine’s reception.

This year people at the party noted his tie and he explained that he was wearing it to denote that this was Facebook’s “intense” year.

Last year when we walked around Davos they had about 50 million users. Today? More than 150 million with about 450,000 new users joining every day.

This is Facebook’s make or break year. It is the year that will set them up to be one of Silicon Valley’s most respected brands along with HP, Intel, Google or, well, it could be the year that the wheels come off of the train and everything goes wrong.

The tie is his way of telling his team and the world that this is Facebook’s most intense year.

We talked about a few other things too, here’s a selection.

**I gave him heck for kicking off people from Facebook who didn’t deserve the “death penalty,” as I put it. He said that they are always looking at how to protect its system from spammers and bad actors. “We’d rather put up with a few false positives,” he told me. He did like my idea of a less punitive “jail” for first-time offenders, though, so that the team can turn off certain features instead of just killing the account altogether. He also said that his system looks for “outlying” behavior. He said if you behave like an average user you should never trigger the algorithms that will get you kicked off. Of course, that irks me a bit because my usage of social media sites is totally outlier behavior. But, I can see his point. One thing that’s nice about Facebook is that I see very little spam or other nasty behavior.

**Facebook is, he told me, studying “sentiment” behavior. It hasn’t yet used that research in its public service yet, but is looking to figure out if people are having a good day or bad day. He said that already his teams are able to sense when nasty news, like stock prices are headed down, is underway. He also told me that the sentiment engine notices a lot of “going out” kinds of messages on Friday afternoon and then notices a lot of “hungover” messages on Saturday morning. He’s not sure where that research will lead. We talked about how sentiment analysis might lead to a new kind of news display in Facebook. Knowing whether a story is positive or negative would let Facebook pick a good selection of both kinds of news, or maybe even let you choose whether you want to see only “happy” news.

**At the Time Magazine party tons of people came up to him to tell him their Facebook stories. He deals with them graciously and talks to them about features in Facebook they might try. He noted with one such fan that lots of people haven’t played with the privacy settings, which give you control over who can see your photos, for instance. I think that’s really why Facebook is so popular. I know my wife really loves Facebook but hasn’t taken to Twitter or friendfeed. I sense that her ability to control which friends see her stuff is one reason why she’s so enthusiastic about Facebook. The second in command at Time, Michael Elliot said he would be so cool with his kids if they new he was hanging out with Zuckerberg.

**He asked me what I was most excited about. We talked about friendfeed. It’s clear to me that he’s watching friendfeed and learning from it about what works and doesn’t work. We talked about how it let me “sift” through tons of news and noise and pick things out for my friends to read. He’s very interested in that trend and, indeed, took a lot of shots when he added a newsfeed to Facebook. Now, he notes, that is a key feature of Facebook and even the haters have gotten used to it.

**He attended Vladimir Putin’s talk and thought Putin’s talk was interesting. “He is running Russia like the CEO of a big oil company,” Zuckerberg told me. As we talked it was clear that Zuckerberg analyzes how other people run things and is looking for positive things to do with his own company and is looking for what turns him off. He studied Psychology at Harvard and I see that training come out when discussing world events with him. You can also see his understanding of how people work all through Facebook.

Anyway, I like the new intensity, but I did note that he was still wearing jeans and had his top button undone. Casual intensity. Sounds like Facebook is growing up, doesn’t it?
