Social Media Cartoon: The Twitter Follower Bots
April 1st, 2009 | by Dharmesh Shah

The Social Media Cartoon is an occasional Mashable  feature created in partnership with Hubspot.

Ever got a Twitter follow notification from a Twitter user with a spammy name like “Satellite TV for PC”? Did you notice they’re following thousands of people, but not all those people are following them back?

The account might be a Twitter follow bot: an automated script that follows thousands of users in the hope some of them might return the follow and subscribe to the spammy messages. And if you don’t follow them back? They’ll automatically unfollow you after a few days.  Mashable first covered this issue a year ago in the article: “Is Twitter About to Have a Big Spam Problem?“.

Ever felt hounded by Twitter follow bots? Take solace in our latest Social Media Cartoon!
